Shooting upwards from below the water surface offers unique perspectives, and that sense of detachment needed to properly take in a scene, or a concept. In this image we associated freedivers with tad poles, both being partly terrestrial and partly aquatic creatures in development.

The freediving “no fins” discipline calls for long glides which allow the mind and body to rest and feel the water flow in between the movements. It’s an “imperfect” stillness as it’s not real as such: the body still moves through the water, while the mind aims for perfect quiet and precision. We chose this perspective to leave a sense of dreaminess and wonder.

This photo, as the title hints, wants to convey a sense of humbleness and petiteness in front of “the bigger picture” - the universe and vast open spaces out there. Like a small star in the sky or an atom in the universe, we are but a tiny part of a much vaster reality, which we should thrive to respect and comprehend.

An ode to a world of tales and fantastic creations which the humans have imagined since the old times. Our nature has always tended towards something magical and maybe only really expressible through creativity and wonder. Also an ode to our mammalian dive reflex and aquatic instincts.

Corals are animals, but they often look like plants. This photo is a tribute to their intriguing nature, and to the complementarity they harmoniously display. Here we associated these corals to a bright bouquet of flowers growing in the dark deep sea waters.

Here’s another visual association between different natural elements: fire and water, red and blue hues, aquatic creatures and the man-made structures they often grow upon and beautify. Multiple layers of aesthetic pleasures for the senses.

Reflections from a sacred water pond in Ubud. Balinese Hindu believe in the concept of balance between all elements in life: birth, preservation, death (which always bring to a rebirth and so the cycle repeats itself). The frangipani that have fallen from the branches into the water are looking back up at the tree they came from, as if knowing that their nutrients will not be lost. They also face the sky, symbol of the afterlife. Everything is an evolution; nothing is lost.

Frangipani trees are abundant in the tropics, where their perfumed flowers are used in ceremonies, offerings, and as a decoration. This “crowded” composition is a hymn to the abundance and composed chaos of life in a tropical and busy island like Bali.

The precise patterns of some of the leaves reflected in this still body of water give way to the gentler background of the sky and its mysterious hues. Inspired by Salvador Dalí’s artwork and by the concept of a time melting and slowing down, almost transforming the subjects, as it seems to be the case for that colourful (gem-resembling) organic matter floating on the surface of the water in the bottom right corner of the photo.

On the surface, brightly coloured lotus leaves and the rain drops that chose them as a bed. Reflected above, an imponent cloudy sky. The stark contrasts of up, below and all around: a game of lights and shadows. The viewer’s eye is left to wonder whether the point of view comes from below or above the water. All is a matter of points of view and reflections - same as in life.

A proud yet humble lotus flower emerging from dark and stagnant depths, aiming for the light and remaining unmarked from the stagnant water that it came out of. A powerful symbol of enlightenment and spiritual awakening.

The White Spider Lily (Lycoris albiflora) represents freshness and a positive nature. Enjoying the simple pleasures of life and seizing the moment is one of the recurrent themes in Carpe Diem, so we found that this photo, its composition and meaning perfectly integrated within this exhibition. The calibrated contrast between dark and bright areas represents the sought-after balance of opposites.
